Text Section in Question:

Article II.I – Elected officers, Section 2, Clause 1.6
1.6 To chair the School Life Scholarship Committee, formerly known as the ASUU Scholarship Board.

Article IV, Section 15, Clauses 3.1.1 & 3.1.2 (3.1.2.1, 3.1.2.2, 3.1.2.3)

The ASUU Scholarship will be awarded in a manner selected most appropriate by the committee and in agreement with Bylaws, rules and regulations guarding ASUU monies.

The ASUU Scholarship Board shall determine the criteria upon which the scholarships will be awarded during their initial meeting. These criteria shall be listed on the scholarship application and made known to all applicants for the ASUU Scholarship. All applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered eligible for the scholarship as outlined below:

  • The applicant shall have been a member of the ASUU for at least one (1) semester prior to applying for the ASUU Student Scholarship.
  • The applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater.
  • Individuals who are receiving financial compensation from ASUU are not eligible to apply for this scholarship

Interpretation:

The question posed here is if the scholarship committee should be known as the School Life Scholarship Committee or as The ASUU Scholarship Board.

The answer to this question lies within the writing and the intent of ASUU Scholarship money. The writing in Article IV, Section 15, Clauses 3.1.1 & 3.1.2 state that “the scholarship shall be awarded in a manner most appropriate by the committee” and “The ASUU Scholarship Board shall determine the criteria upon which the scholarships will be awarded during their initial meeting”. The only requirements that are in the constitution are membership of ASUU, GPA of 2.5 or greater, and not already receiving financial compensation from ASUU.

Now if we take a look at the intent behind the scholarship money. This is a little more ambiguous, but since it is left up to the committee with only very basic requirements we can assume that the intent is to be flexible allowing the present students to identify the group that is in need the most in our ever-changing world.

In conclusion my interpretation is for the scholarship committee to be known as the ASUU Scholarship Board. If the board was known as the School Life Scholarship Committee it would confine the type of students that would be eligible for scholarship before the board even met. Being known as the ASUU Scholarship Board allows the flexibility to help in need students where the elected officials feel is needed most as was intended in the ASUU Constitution.
