Clarification on the Utah Fight Song
The Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) is committed to working for a more inclusive environment on our campus. With this in mind, our administration drafted and presented a Joint Resolution to our Student Assembly and Senate in support of examining the Utah Fight Song for ways to make it more inclusive. Both the Assembly and Senate are comprised of elected students from each of the 17 academic colleges at the University of Utah. These legislative bodies reviewed the Joint Resolution and passed it with no dissenting vote. These student leaders voted in support of having a dialogue about the song and potentially finding ways to make the song more inclusive. As a clarification, ASUU does not have the power to change the Fight Song; only to advocate for students in the process. We are encouraged that the dialogue has begun and are hopeful that it will continue and all voices will be heard. We understand the passion that many feel for the traditions of the University of Utah and hope that more students will desire to participate in these traditions. We encourage all to review both the Joint Resolution passed and the current fight song and share their thoughts. It will be critical to maintain civility in the process and respect for differing views on this subject.
